A surgeon at the Autónoma University in the State of Morelos with a Master of Science degree specializing in health systems from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from UCL Institute of Education, University of London, UK. Since 2000 he has been conducting research on migration and health, HIV/AIDS and human rights at the INSP’s Center for Research in Health Systems; and since 2010 has formed part of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNI II). He is deputy coordinator at the INSP’s Migration and Health Research Unit (UMyS) through which initiatives are promoted to meet the challenges brought about by the relationship between migration and health in the Americas.
Respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, dehydration, and injuries resulting from accidents are just some of the most common health issues suffered by irregular Central American migrants in transit through Mexico, who are perceived as a health risk to society.
